Overview of Challan?

A challan is a form required for making any payment towards taxes that are regularly decided and collected by the Indian government. It is also known as an ‘imprest treasury’ and is widely used by individuals and businesses for depositing fees, taxes, service charges, etc. Challans were first introduced by the British colonial government in India and have retained its purpose in the current system.

Types of Challans?

• ITNS- 280 This challan is used for paying taxes under the head of income tax.
• ITNS- 281 This is used for payment towards corporate tax.
• ITNS- 282 This one is used for tax deduction by employers and companies
• ITNS- 283 This is used for making advance tax payments.
• ITNS- 284 This challan is used for payments made towards self- assessment tax.
• ITNS- 285 This type of challan is used to deposit securities against any tax that has been paid.
• ITNS- 286 This is used to pay tax with respect to Fringe Benefits.
• ITNS- 287 This type of challan is used to remit Tax Deducted at Source (TDS).

Challan Generation and Payment Process?

Challans can be generated with several methods and payments regarding them are to be done within a specific timeline. Here are a few steps for the same:

• The first step is to choose the relevant form of challan based on the payment type.
• Once the challan form is selected, the details regarding the payment – the type, value, the description – needs to be provided.
• After that, the requisite fee needs to be paid in the specified account.
• If the payment is made in the form of cash, then the payee must provide the proof of payment either electronically or in physical format.
• Post payment, the challan will get updated and the payee will receive an acknowledgement.
