The latest minimum wages in Mizoram run from ₹420 to ₹730 a day, notified on 16 June 2023 by the Labour, Employment, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Department, Government of Mizoram, with effect from 01 April 2023.
Start with the notified daily rate for the worker’s scheduled employment and skill category. Monthly wages are that daily rate multiplied by the monthly divisor; annual is the monthly figure times twelve. Whether Mizoram pays a consolidated rate or basic plus a dearness allowance is set by the notification itself, and it matters: a basic-only calculation underpays every worker on the sheet where a separate allowance applies.
A normal working day is nine hours and a normal week is 48 hours with one weekly rest day. Work beyond either limit is overtime at 2× the ordinary rate. Where a worker is employed for part of a wage period, wages are payable proportionately for the days actually worked.
The mistake to avoid: derive the overtime hourly rate from the full notified wage, including any dearness allowance, not from the basic figure alone. Overtime computed on basic is one of the two most common underpayments, alongside misclassification.

Classification follows the nature of the work actually performed, not the job title on the appointment letter. Misclassification is the most common cause of underpayment claims: a worker doing skilled work on a semi-skilled designation is owed the difference for every wage period, and the designation is no defence.
Act on this: hold the skill category as a field on the employee master, not just inside the job title, and review it whenever duties change. The register of workers has to show the category, and an inspector will compare it against what people are actually doing on the floor.
Minimum wages in Mizoram apply to every worker in a scheduled employment notified by the state government. There is no small-establishment exemption – headcount does not decide coverage, the scheduled employment does. Contract workers are covered on the same footing as directly employed workers, and where a contractor underpays, the principal employer carries the liability. A signed agreement at a lower figure is void to that extent.
Underpayment exposes an employer to recovery of the shortfall for the whole affected period, compensation on top, and prosecution. Because rates revise on a cycle, an unnoticed notification quietly builds arrears across every worker until it is caught – and the arrears usually cost more than the fine.
Act on this: reconcile the wage sheet against the current notification at every revision date, and keep the superseded notification on file. Arrears claims and inspector queries both reach back into wage periods you have already closed.
Minimum wages in Mizoram are fixed by the Labour, Employment, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Department, Government of Mizoram under the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, read with the Mizoram Minimum Wages Rules. The state sets a rate for each scheduled employment and skill category, and revises it in line with movement in the cost-of-living index. The revision frequency, the index period and the CPI point value behind the current rates are stated in the notification itself.
Act on this: once the revision cycle is confirmed, put those months in the payroll calendar and hold the affected runs for a rate check before disbursement. Notifications frequently reach employers after the effective date, which turns a routine rate change into an arrears calculation.
| Effective From | Notified On | Unskilled / Day | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrears for a closed wage period are worked out from the rate that was in force then, not the current one — which is why each notification is listed with its own effective date. | |||
States differ in structure as well as amount – some notify a consolidated rate, others a basic figure plus a dearness allowance that moves separately. That structural difference is what makes a like-for-like comparison misleading, and why a wage band copied across states rarely holds.
| State / Benchmark | Unskilled / Day | Structure |
|---|---|---|
| Mizoram | – | Consolidated or basic + allowance – read the structure off the state notification. |
| National Floor Wage | – | Advisory floor, not directly enforceable on employers. |
| Assam | – | Set by its own state notification. |
| Manipur | – | Set by its own state notification. |
| Tripura | – | Set by its own state notification. |
Act on this: a single all-India wage band will underpay in some states and overpay in others, and the underpayment is the one that creates liability. Hold rates per state, per zone and per skill category, and let the notification drive the rate.
The table below sets out the minimum wage rate in Mizoram by skill category. Read the figure for the worker’s scheduled employment and skill category – a rate carried over from a superseded notification creates arrears from the effective date.

Aizawl, Lunglei and Champhai follow the state minimum wages in Mizoram for their scheduled employment and skill category. Where the state applies a zone or area classification, the workplace address decides which zone applies, and that zone sets the rate – so establish it before the figure.
Minimum wages in Mizoram are ₹420 a day for unskilled work, ₹460 for semi-skilled, ₹570 for Skilled – II (Junior Grade) and ₹730 for Skilled – I (Senior Grade). Over a 26-day month those come to ₹10,920, ₹11,960, ₹14,820 and ₹18,980. The rates took effect on 01 April 2023.
Mizoram does not revise on a fixed six-monthly or annual cycle. The current rates were notified on 16 June 2023 with effect from 01 April 2023 and no later revision has been issued, so the same figures have applied for three years.
Every worker in a scheduled employment notified by the Government of Mizoram is covered. There is no small-establishment exemption, so headcount does not decide coverage – the scheduled employment does. Contract workers are covered on the same footing as directly employed workers in the same employment and skill category.
Yes. Mizoram notifies one rate per category of worker and applies it state-wide, with no zone or district loading – ₹420 a day for unskilled work everywhere in the state. Separate rates exist for public motor transport employees, so check whether that schedule covers your establishment.
Mizoram notifies the daily rate, so the monthly figure is derived from it: multiply by 26. Unskilled ₹420 × 26 gives ₹10,920 a month and ₹1,31,040 a year. Skilled – I at ₹730 a day gives ₹18,980 a month and ₹2,27,760 a year.
Yes. Contract workers are entitled to the same notified rate as directly employed workers in the same scheduled employment and skill category. If the contractor underpays, the principal employer is liable for the shortfall, and a signed contract at a lower figure is void to that extent.
Super Payroll holds state and UT rates against each employee’s skill category, flags roles that fall below a new notification, and recalculates arrears for the affected wage periods. Contract Labour Management does the same for contractor headcount, so an invoice below the notified rate is caught before it is approved.
